Rare Earths in Brazil: Historical Aspects, Production, and Perspectives

Abstract: RARE EARTHS IN BRAZIL: HISTORICAL ASPECTS, PRODUCTION, AND PERSPECTIVES. This contribution introduces a brief discussion about the properties and applications of the rare earth elements, with a focus on their current status in Brazil. The general chemical properties, main applications and historical background of the chemistry of these elements are presented, and special attention is devoted to the development of the exploitation and both academic and industrial activities involving rare earths in Brazil. A di… Show more

“…After three hours of treatment, the band initially centered at 1100 cm -1 (P-O and Si-O ν 3 stretches) is sharpened and displaced to 1015 cm -1 , a characteristic frequency for tetragonal yttrium phosphates, 69 thereby evidencing the dissolution of the silica matrix. In addition, with the absence of silica signals at ~450 cm -1 and with no band superposition, an intensity ratio of 2/1 between the PO4 3-ν 3 and ν 4 bands is observed in the final sample, which is in agreement with other reported phosphates and phosphovanadates.41,…”

Although RE vanadates are well known for displaying an intense absorption band in the UV range, their absorptivity in the VUV usually is remarkably low.…”
