A visão é um sentido fundamental para o aprendizado e sobrevivência humana, o olho humano é capaz de discernir através da percepção das cores e contrates, os objetos observados e sua localização no espaço. A avaliação das qualidades de visão do indivíduo permite identificar possíveis falhas e promover a compensação com meios terapêuticos ou órteses ópticas. Os testes podem ser realizados com tabelas de optotipos, botões de cores ou figuras. O estudo da capacidade funcional visual em crianças, não alfabetizados, indivíduos com baixa capacidade de comunicação ou portadores de síndromes, exige a habilidade e emprego de equipamentos adaptados pelo avaliador. Em busca de observar a acuidade visual e resposta confiável sobre o estado do sistema neuro visual em situações especiais, emprega-se os teste de Teller. Disponíveis em versões como: raquetes, placas e cartões com padrões específicos que consistem em listras, grades, geralmente em preto e branco. Objetiva-se demonstrar um protocolo de avaliação com o TAC, Teller Acuity Cards, promovendo a utilização desse instrumento de avaliação da visão pelos optometristas brasileiros.

This study aimed to present the characteristics of visual development from a clinical viewpoint in infants and preschool children aged 0-6 years who were born at term with no pregnancy or childbirth complications. Methods: We conducted a bibliographic review on visual development in infants and preschool children. Results: We described visual development in children according to age groups: 0-1 month, 1-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-10 months, 10 months-1 year and 4 months, 1 year and 4 months-2 years, 2-4 years, and 4-6 years. Conclusion: Visual responses in infants and preschool children born at term and with normal development were observed to occur in an integrated manner with neuromotor functions in addition to cognitive and psycho-emotional sensory, behavioral, and visual capacity.

Introduction: In Brazil, congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) is the main cause of visual impairment in childhood. It causes retinochoroiditis, which should lead to blindness. Minas Gerais has a prevalence of 1 newborn with congenital toxoplasmosis for every 770 live births. Objective: To evaluate visual functionality and tasks of self-care with TC classified in groups according to a visual acuity. Method: A cross-sectional study with 96 preschoolers with CT. Ophthalmologic examination and assessment of some functionalities were performed: The Functional Vision Evaluation (AVIF-2 at 6 years) and the Pediatric Disability Assessment Inventory (PEDI-Brazilian version). Results: Children were classified into three groups according to visual acuity: moderate / severe visual loss (n=16), low level (n=39) and normal vision (n=41). The chance of difference is not greater than AVIF-2 at 6 years among the three groups (p=0.001), being (p <0.0001) between the groups with moderate/severe visual and normal vision. The domain scores are displayed as the end result (p=0.022). The test PEDI is not able to make a difference between the groups. It is not different between the scores of the tests carried out. Conclusion: Children with CT without moderate / severe visual impairment, compromising visual functionality with greater impairment without visual accompaniment. The AVIF-2 at 6 years test demonstrated the impairment between groups with different visual acuities. The PEDI (self-care) test was not performed with a significant difference in scores between the groups. The AVIF-2 at 6 years test may contribute to the more effective intervention in the visual habilitation of children with CT and low vision.
