Atypical presentation of fibroepithelial polyp: a report of two cases

Abstract: Fibroepithelial polyps are benign non-epithelial tumors arising from mesodermal tissue and are commonly found on the skin. They can develop on the eyelid and surrounding area and rarely appear at other sites. While most cutaneous cases are diagnosed incidentally, the lesions may be symptomatic based on their location. The etiology of fibroepithelial polyps is not fully understood but may involve trauma, chronic irritation, allergic factors, and developmental or congenital causes. Although fibroepithelial polyp… Show more

“…The etiology of fibroepithelial polyps is unknown. A reactive etiology (due to localized trauma or tissue irritation) and a congenital origin have been proposed as potential explanations [ 46 ]. Notably, data on genetic findings in botryoid or giant fibroepithelial polyps is scarce.…”

“…The common sites of fibroepithelial polyps are the skin and genitourinary tract. They may rarely present in the head and neck region at sites including the nasal cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, trachea, bronchus and external auditory canal 3 . Etiology of fibroepithelial polypsis unknown.…”

“…Fibro-epithelial stromal polyps (FSP) are non-epithelial benign growths of mesodermal origin. 1 They are typically seen in vagina, infrequently on vulva and rarely in extragenital sites. 2 Among the extra-genital sites, FSP of breast (nipple) have been previously reported in the literature.…”

“…3,4 Other sites include the external auditory canal, the tonsil, the ureter, oropharynx, the nasal vestibule and the eyelid. 1,[5][6][7][8][9] Though the occurrence and the rarity of Fibroepithelial stromal polyps of nipple has been described previously, a fibro-epithelial stromal polyp arising from the areola of breast with intact nipple hasn't been reported in the literature till date. 3,4 We report a rare case of giant fibro-epithelial stromal polyp arising from the areola of left breast and peri areolar skin with satellite lesions in our case report.…”
