Optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography of central retinal artery occlusion in the patent cilioretinal artery: a case report

Abstract: Here we report the case of a 78-year-old male patient with a 2-day history of low visual acuity and fundus and who was diagnosed with central retinal artery occlusion. In addition, the patient had an allergy to fluorescein. A fundus examination of the left eye found a pink optic disc with blurred margins, diffuse pallor in the retina with arterial attenuation, and a normal band of the retinal area in the macular region. Optical coherence tomography revealed increased thickness of the inner retina. Optical cohe… Show more

“…Optical coherence tomography examination has demonstrated increased thickness of the internal retinal layers in the affected retina in CRAO. 4 Consistently, we detected increased RNFL thickness and GCL thickness on SD-OCT in the involved eye compared to the fellow eye in our patient supporting the diagnosis of CRAO. We could not identify a vascular perfusion abnormality except for a mild parafoveal leakage on FA.…”

“…CRAO has been shown to be significantly associated with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, hyperlipidemia, and cardiac arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation). 4 Typical fundoscopic appearance during early period of CRAO includes retinal whitening and a cherry-red spot in foveal region. Incidence of visual improvement in CRAO patients is relatively low.…”

“…Our case study shows that OCTA is a useful tool to establish reduced perfusion and vessel density, conforming to the study by Yang et al [10] that vessel density of the SCP and a 300 μm area around the foveal avascular zone is significantly reduced in retinal artery occlusion. OCTA is also a non-invasive alternative diagnostic tool to monitor progression of patients with vascular occlusions [11] . To conclude, our case highlights a potentially blinding complication of PRP injection around the ocular region.…”
