Surgical amniotic membrane transplantation after conjunctival and limbal tumor excision

Abstract: AMT was effective for reconstruction of tissue defect after excision and cryotherapy of limbal and conjunctival tumors. In most of these cases, complete healing was achieved with a smooth, stable, and translucent surface.

“…When considering tumour recurrence in the usage of OMG, one has to consider the possibility that recurrence can occur underneath the graft. In such cases, due to the thickness of the graft, OMG could conceal a tumour and noticing tumour recurrence is delayed 27 28. In this study, we did not compare OMG with other, thinner tissues such as amniotic membrane and hence cannot comment on a possible delay in diagnosis.…”

“…Besides mucosal tissues, the amniotic membrane is an alternative tissue that can be used in the ocular reconstruction. The tissue has been used to cover defects after tumour excision15 27 28 but also in combination with oral mucosa grafting (OMG) in the treatment of severe symblephara 14. The use of amniotic membrane has the advantage of being less invasive and it has been suggested that due to the thinness of the membrane, monitoring tumour recurrence is facilitated 27 28…”

“…11,12 Recently, amniotic membrane transplantation has been frequently reported after excision of various conjunctival tumors, including primary acquired melanosis, nevus, malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and papilloma. [13][14][15][16] In this method, most authors reported high success rates with few complications. Although the amniotic membrane is a useful tissue for ocular surface reconstruction, it has some considerable disadvantages.…”

“…These include scar formation, symblepharon, granuloma, and partial or complete limbal stem cell deficiency. 5 Hence, it is important to select an appropriate and reliable graft for ocular surface reconstruction in order to reduce the risk of these complications. The amniotic membrane is an excellent choice in restoring and reconstructing the ocular surface following large conjunctival lesion excision.…”
