Visual rehabilitation using mini-scleral contact lenses after penetrating keratoplasty

Abstract: Mini-SCL use allowed successful visual rehabilitation after corneal keratoplasty, particularly in patients who required corrective lenses for low visual acuity and were unable to wear RGP contact lenses. Our results indicate that mini-scleral lenses may be an option for the treatment of corneal irregularities, such as those associated with keratoplasty.

“…There has been a dramatic increase in the number of scleral publications from 2012 to 2016 compared to the previous 5-year period based on a recent study on the body of scleral lens-related scientific research [1]. Recent literature includes single-center, retrospective case series which generally describe a single lens design and unified fitting philosophy [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Studies on observed or potential impact of scleral lenses on ocular surface structures have also been published within the past 5 years [8,9], as has research on the structure and contour of conjunctival, episcleral, and scleral tissue [10][11][12][13].…”

“…The majority of patients had poor compliance and were taking oral and/or topical corticosteroids which play a role in reducing the immune defense system. [14][15][16][17]24,[37][38][39] Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) has been documented with ScCL use. 26,39 ScCL cause mild hypoxic changes to the cornea epithelium tissue due to decreased tear exchange and larger lens diameter.…”

“…13 Hygiene and compliance are also fundamental in preventing the development of infections. [14][15][16][17] This paper will discuss ScCL problems related to handling, care, and compliance. Management, symptoms, clinical signs and etiology of issues and complications are presented in Tables 1-3.…”
