Optical coherence tomography and multifocal electroretinography of patients with advanced neovascular age-related macular degeneration before, during, and after treatment with ranibizumab

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate retinal morphology and function of patients with advanced neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) before, during, and after treatment with ranibizumab. Methods: Twenty-one eyes diagnosed with advanced AMD were studied with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG). Three intravitreal injections of ranibizumab were administered at 1-month intervals. Evaluations were performed before the first injection (D0) and at 30 (D30), 60 (D60), and 90 day… Show more

“…Consistent for those studies are mainly improved or unchanged mERG amplitudes and implicit times corroborating our results. In contrast, other studies have shown a decline in mERG values, maybe due to a different study design with evaluation after only three consecutive ranibizumab injections and with the inclusion of just three patients [26], or eyes with more advanced mAMD with a very low visual acuity of B 20/100 [27].…”

“…Scotoma development is connected with damage or death of photoreceptor cells, retinal pigment epithelial cells, and choroidal endothelial cells, and the macula is vulnerable to oxidative and ischemia stress, with oxidative stress being associated with macular injury. [1,2] At present, it is believed that the occurrence of the disease is related to many factors, such as: hereditary lesions, [3] age-related macular degeneration, [4] postoperative eye disease and trauma in this case factors. [5] Macular degeneration has a variable prognosis.…”

“…The latest method for the confirmation of AMD diagnosis is optical coherent tomography (OCT). This is a non-invasive method, allowing to get good resolution retina photography in vivo, to monitor the dynamics of diseases of retina and facilitating diagnostics[41]. OCT provide quantitative and qualitative information on retina condition.…”
