Cost of the treatment of myelodisplastic syndrome in Brazil

Abstract: Introduction Myelodysplastic syndrome is an incurable and rare hematological disease that affects the production of blood cells. One aim of treatment is to maintain the blood-cell count to near-normal levels. This is mainly achieved with hematopoietic- growth factors and transfusions. Our objective was to determine the cost of supportive treatment/care for patients with low and intermediate I risk myelodysplastic syndrome in respect to private healthcare plans in Brazil. Method We adapted the National Comprehe… Show more

“…In the private sector (covering about 25% of the Brazilian population), a national price list for blood products (for example, comparable to the NHS Blood and Transplant price lists in the United Kingdom (NHS, 2018)) is not available. One previous study focusing on the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in Brazil has estimated the cost of RBC transfusion at US$ 164.00 per unit based on the Brazilian Hierarchical Classification of Medical Procedures (CBHPM) (Clark & Faleiros, 2011), a standard designed by the Brazilian Medical Association and endorsed by the Federal Council of Medicine. The CBHPM classifies treatment and diagnostic pathways according to their complexity, and provides an estimate of operating cost in Brazilian Reais (R$) to ensure that physicians are adequately compensated for the procedures.…”
