Kinetic fluorimetric determination of Mesna (Sodium-2-mercaptoethane sulfonate) in drug products through oxidation with cerium(IV)

Abstract: A simple and sensitive kinetic spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the determination of mesna in drug products. The method is based on oxidation of the studied drug with cerium(IV) ammonium sulphate in acidic medium. The fluorescence of the produced Ce(III) was measured at 359 nm after excitation at 259 nm. The method involves determination of mesna by kinetic study of its oxidation at 100 o C for a fixed time of 20 min. The different experimental parameters affecting development and stability of reac… Show more

“…From the table we can conclude that for MSN, the proposed spectrouorimetric method is as sensitive as the only reported spectrouorimetric method 4 regarding the linearity range and limit of detection, but is more advantageous in terms of specicity, as the reported method depends on the reducing effect of the drug on cerium(IV). 4 On the other hand, the proposed spectrophotometric method is either more sensitive or of comparable sensitivity with the other reported methods of analysis, except the indirect spectrophotometric methods using Methyl Orange and Congo Red which are more sensitive. 6 For TMN, both proposed methods are more sensitive than previously published ones except a gas chromatographic method 19 which is of comparable sensitivity with the spectrophotometric method, but is still less sensitive than the proposed uorimetric one.…”

“…Screening the literature revealed various techniques that have been used for MSN quantitation. Of these we can mention: a kinetic spectrouorimetric method using cerium(IV) as an oxidizing agent, 4 different spectrophotometric methods utilizing several reagents such as potassium permanganate, 5 Methyl Orange and Congo Red, 6 N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine 7 and ferric solution. 8 Other techniques include high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 9,10 capillary electrophoresis (CE) 10 and Raman spectroscopy.…”
