Determination of trace metals in air of Chittagong city-Bangladesh

Abstract: KEYWORDSAir pollution problem is severe in the urban areas caused by both mobile as well as stationary sources. Mainly the two-stroke and diesel-run vehicles cause the severity of the problem by emitting highly contaminated exhausts. Considering severity of the problem, current study was undertaken to measure the air pollutants level in air of Chittagong city, Bangladesh. The heavy metals Zn, Pb, Mn, Cd, Cu and Co in suspended particulate matter (SPM) were determined at different locations of Chittagong city. … Show more

“…On the other side, the P value obtained for Cr was 1.52 indicating that there was no significant difference in Cr concentrations in the analyzed dried fruits (p > 0.05). One possible explanation of the significant difference in metals concentrations existed between the different types of the analyzed dried fruits might be stemmed from several factors that influence the metal concentration in fruit such as air pollution (industrial emission), irrigation with contaminated water, contaminated soil, using excess amounts of chemicalbased fertilizers and metal-based pesticides, harvesting process, storage, transportation, and marketing [32,38,41,42].…”

“…However, the consumption of dried fruits contaminated with toxic heavy metals may result in a serious risk to human health [8,17,25]. In recent years, there is an increasing concern about human exposure to toxic heavy metals as a serious health and environmental problem overall the world [1,7,[26][27][28][29][30][31][32]. Human exposure to heavy metals has largely increased as a result of rapid urban and industrial developments [6,10,29,33,34].…”

“…Moreover, recently, the studies also focused on identification of high pollutant-emitting activity and personal exposure assessment, which are used to design and take the intervention at the individual level. 2125 Likewise, in Ethiopia, very few cross-sectional and pilot studies have been conducted on exposure assessment for both indoor and outdoor air pollution. Hence, different researchers have reported concentrations of CO, NO 2 , PM 10 , PM 2.5 and TSP in indoor and outdoor air at different parts of the country (Gonder, Butajira area, Shebidino wereda, rural area of Tigray, Kebribeyah, rural area of Jima, rural area of Wellega and Gimbie and Addis Ababa).…”

“…Besides sediment, air of the city also polluted by heavy metals. Ahmed et al [103] reported that the concentrations of heavy metals in ambient air of different locations in Chittagong city exceeded the threshold limit. Parvin et al [104] recorded higher concentration of Pb and Cr in vegetables (Green arum leaves, jute leaves, water spinach, bottle gourd, wax gourd and sweet gourd collected from industrial area (Nasirabad, Agrabad, Vatiary and Chalkbazar).…”
