On reduction of longest accessibility gap in LEO sun-synchronous satellite missions

Abstract: Accessibility gaps are inherent properties of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) sun-synchronous satellite missions. Long accessibility gaps in satellite missions imply strict in-orbit autonomy requirement, met by expensive solutions. Thus, methods to shorten accessibility gaps in satellite missions are appreciated by space mission designers. For that purpose, in this paper, ground segment site location is employed as a mechanism to reduce the longest accessibility gaps in LEO sun-synchronous missions. For a given repeatab… Show more

“…Constrained finite time optimal control of quadcopter in the presence of mechanical constraints, such as maximum thrust in the rotors, is proposed in Alexis et al (2010). Optimal control theory and optimization is applied to various missions of satellite, airplane and rotorcraft (Khamseh, H.B., Navabi, M. (2010), Khamseh, H.B., Navabi, M. (2011)). In Guerrero-Castellanose et al (2011), by using nested saturation functions, a quaternion-based bounded control method is presented.…”

“…Thus, it is convenient to consider only dominant J 2 perturbing geopotential. As discussed in our previous work, 29 for J 2 perturbing geopotential, an elegant form of Lagrange planetary equations is obtained, given in equation ( 2)…”

“…To take account of this peculiar access patterns, in our previous work, two accessbased metrics were developed, namely total accessibility duration (TAD) and longest accessibility gap (LAG). 1 LAG was comprehensively discussed in Bonyan Khamseh and Navabi, 2 and here TAD is treated. Accessibility gap and accessibility duration are schematically shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Typical pattern of access to a LEO sunsynchronous satellite. 2 inherent dependency of TAD formulation to date. Then, in ''Perturbative method of TAD determination'', the perturbative method of TAD determination is discussed and formulas for TAD determination are developed in ''Development of surrogate models''.…”
