Solid State Polymerization: Its action on thermal and rheological properties of PET/PC reactive blends

Abstract: Abstract:The solid state polymerization (SSP) of PET/PC reactive extrusion blends -with and without cobalt catalyst -at different polymer ratios was studied. Thermal and rheological evaluations were performed. DSC results showed changes in the PET's T g , T ch , T m and X c . The melt flow rate (MFR) decreased for PET and the blends. The intrinsic viscosity increased. The variation in calorimetric and rheological properties might be attributed to the PET's chain extension reactions -esterification and transest… Show more

“…They described that a copolymer was produced through a simultaneous SSP and ester-carbonate interchange reaction. More recently, Mendes and Pereira [17] published an article on SSP of PET/PC reactive blends, with and without cobalt catalyst, at different polymer ratios, focusing on rheological and thermal properties.…”

“…PET is a semicrystalline thermoplastic polyester widely used in several applications due to its low relative cost, good mechanical properties, and easy processing. 4 -6 Nonetheless, PET is one of the most consumed plastics, and it is used in numerous applications with short shelf life, such as disposable bottles and other packaging, generating a large volume of waste that is often inappropriately disposed in the environment. 7 Therefore, considering the importance of looking for applications that stimulate the recycling of the PET residue, the present study was developed using recycled PET water bottles.…”

“…Polymer blending is in fact a more economical method for making new materials or compounds compared to direct polymer synthesis. For this reason, a lot of research studies have been focused on the study of the best blending method of these polymers [1,2,3,4,5], and many studies evaluated the reactions that occur between them [6,7].…”
