The objective of this study was to evaluate the annual standardized precipitation index (SPI) obtained from the DrinC software based on multivariate analysis in the identification of rainfall and drought extremes in the State of Alagoas and its relationship with El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Monthly rainfall data from 1960 to 2016 from National Water Agency were analysed. Annual SPI (SPI-12) has been designed for comparison with ENSO phases via Oceanic Niño Index for 3.4 region and in identifying climate extremes in the State of Alagoas. The principal component analysis and cluster analysis techniques were applied to the rainfall series of SPI-12. Extreme events were identified in both rainy and drought periods according to SPI-12, and were associated with the ENSO phases (El Niño, La Niña, and Neutral). The first four principal components explained 46.68% of the variance. Our findings are crucial for agriculture and civil defence since northeastern Brazil has several areas of risk and social vulnerability.

Dados pluviométricos horários da Estação Meteorológica Automática (EMA) foram preenchidos com dados da normal climatológica do INMET e com os dados do satélite TRMM via produto 3B43. Esses dois conjuntos preencheram as falhas e homogeneizaram os dados do período de 2000-2012, e foram comparados com a ocorrência dos sistemas sinóticos (ZCAS, ZCOU e SF) e com os episódios de El Niño e La Niña, em Seropédica-RJ. A avaliação foi dividida em escalas médias, percentuais sazonais e acumulados anuais. Os dados sinóticos foram obtidos da Climanálise (1996-2012). As características médias mostraram alta variabilidade interanual e intrassazonal dos sistemas sinóticos, seguida da interação dos sistemas de mesoescala e locais. Os meses com maior precipitação (> 120 mm) foram dezembro, janeiro e março, e os meses com menor precipitação (< 60 mm) foram maio, junho, julho e agosto. O verão (42%) e inverno (10%) possuem características bem definidas e distintas em seus padrões de chuva.

Rainfall over the northeast part of Brazil is highly influenced by several weather systems such as trade winds, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, Easterly Wave Disturbances, Bolivia High and Atlantic Sub-tropical Anticyclone. The objectives of this work were to identify, using cluster analysis, spatial and temporal rainfall patterns for the northeastern Brazilian state of Alagoas, and to relate those patterns with the weather systems that occur over that region, which is the most populated area of semiarid climate in the world. The dataset consists of 30-years long time series of rainfall from 36 stations located on the state. Hierarchical clustering using Ward's algorithm was used to classify the sites into five groups. The stations were grouped according to the distance to the coast and orography. Rainfall is not uniformly distributed in space and time in all regions, such as in two groups within the arid zone, where more than 60% of annual precipitation occurs in a period of 5 months (March to July). Rainfall was highest in the coastal regions and over areas of the state with high altitude, due to orographic rainfall. Overall, rainfall over the state of Alagoas is characterized by strong gradients from the coast to the continent and from north to south due to the physiography of the region and the influence of weather systems with different time scales.
