Sisal in Bahia - Brazil

Abstract: There is a space in the state of Bahia -Brazil, which has been historically differentiated due to the predominance of the productive process of sisal. The use of agave sisalana was able to establish a productive chain for export, which had sufficient impact to spatially differentiate a large portion of the semiarid in Bahia, known as the Sisaleira Region. Our investigation identifies the origin of this process and proposes its analysis from the definition of periods that allow the temporal situation of the exp… Show more

“…The main product of this crop is sisal fiber, which has Brazil as the world's largest producer, with a production of 100,000 t/ year (FAOSTAT, 2023). However, intense competition from synthetic fibers, prolonged droughts, and poor management of natural resources have made this product less attractive to farmers and field workers (Santos & da Silva, 2017). Consequently, keeping the production of sisal fiber economically viable will contribute to keeping the man in the field and with environmental well-being since the crop absorbs more carbon dioxide than it is produced (Nobel & McDaniel, 1988).…”

“…Sisal is a common name for different species and hybrid varieties in the genus Agave (especially Agave sisalana ) cultivated worldwide for the production of hard natural fibers [ 1 , 2 ]. In Brazil, the greatest producer of sisal fibers, sisal-producing areas are concentrated in the Northeastern region of the country, especially in the state of Bahia [ 3 ], followed by the states of Paraíba and Pernambuco [ 4 ]. The semi-arid portion of this region, known as the Caatinga biome, bears a high richness of highly adapted species, in all the domains of life [ 5 , 6 ].…”
