Pantanal plain has large extensions of land formed by many types of landscapes suitable to extensive livestock system. Open grasslands and lowlands are formed by forage such as grasses and forbs widely consumed by cattle. However, climatic and human factors can promote the dissemination of invasive shrub species such as canjiqueira (Byrsonima cydoniifolia A. Juss) making it necessary, in many cases, the human intervention to control the invasion. The present work had as objective to determine the economic threshold level to control canjiqueira through two methods: tractor driven blade and link chains pulled by tractor in different invasion levels plants per hectare. Economic Threshold proved to be a tool for efficient and effective management for making decisions of when and how to do the control of canjiqueira in natural pastures of Pantanal of Nhecolândia.

“…This biome is characterized by a wide alluvial plain which is flooded during the rainy season by the rivers of the surrounding plateaus due to its low capacity of water flow (Alho et al 1988, Barella et al 2001, Alho 2003. In the Pantanal, the pluviometric regime presents 2 well-defined seasons, a rainy season from October to March and a dry season from April to September (Pereira et al 2012). The climate in the states of the Mato Grosso (MT) and Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), according to the Koeppen climate classification system, is type Am (tropical monsoon climate; MT 47.2% and MS 45.6%), Aw (tropical savanna climate; MT 52.8% and MS 36.6%), and a smaller area with Cfa (humid subtropical climate; MS 11.2%).…”

We document the geographical distribution of 6 species of Sciomyzidae from the Pantanal biome of Brazil. The species were collected in aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Sepedomerus bipuncticeps (Malloch, 1933) and Sepedonea canabravana Knutson & Bredt, 1976 are new records from Mato Grosso and Sepedonea lindneri (Hendel, 1932), Sepedonea telson (Steyskal, 1951), Sepedonea veredae Freidberg, 1991, and Thecomyia limbata (Wiedemann, 1819) from Mato Grosso do Sul. Photographs of collection areas, the habitus of adults, and a distribution map of the species are provided.

Resumen: El paisaje como concepto fundamental de integración en la Geografía, vuelve a tomar su papel en este nuevo siglo, caracterizado por la Globalización de la Economía y el Conocimiento y los Problemas Ambientales generados por siglos de explotación irracional de los recursos naturales de nuestro planeta y las consecuencias del Cambio Climático. Es en este contexto que presentamos aquí un análisis detallado de las principales etapas y escuelas que posibilitaron la consolidación de una teoría del paisaje como sistema integrado y su aplicación en diferentes ámbitos y regiones como parte de los esfuerzos por lograr la planificación y ordenamiento del territorio a diferentes niveles, acorde con los retos que este siglo XXI presenta para la sociedad humana, destacando el papel de la delimitación, clasificación y cartografía de las unidades de paisaje como premisa fundamental para su evaluación y conservación y las posibilidades del uso de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica, la Teledetección y la Estadística Multivariada. Abstract:The landscape as a fundamental concept of integration in Geography, returns to take its role in this new century, characterized by the Globalization of the Economy and the Knowledge, and the Environmental Problems generated by centuries of irrational exploitation of the natural resources of our planet and the consequences of Climate Change. It is in this context that we present here a detailed analysis of the main stages and schools of study of the landscape, that made possible the consolidation of a theory of landscapes as a integrated system and its application in different fields and regions as part of the efforts to achieve the planning and land use planning at different levels, in keeping with the challenges of the 21st century presents to the human society, highlighting the role of delineation, classification and mapping of the landscape units for evaluation and conservation and the possibilities of the use of the Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Multivariate Statistical Systems.
