<b>Floral Biology and pollination requirements of sesame (<i>Sesamum indicum</i> L.)</b>

Abstract: ABSTRACT. This study aimed to investigate the floral biology and pollination requirements of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), cultivar CNPA G2. The study was carried out at Barbalha, State of Ceará, and consisted of two phases: floral biology and pollination requirements. Flowers were observed as for time of anthesis, lifespan and stigma receptivity, and were applied the following pollination treatments: open pollination, hand cross-pollination, hand self-pollination, pollination restricted with tulle bags and pol… Show more

“…Large monocultures may decrease pollinator abundance and hence lead to lower cross-pollination 56 . For sesame, our current finding contradicts a study stating that sesame is predominantly autogamous 57 , but is in line with another study revealing best performance in sesame in Brazil after cross-pollination 58 . Nevertheless, crossing rates reported in some studies ranged from less than 10% to 68% 59 , 60 .…”
