Evolution of the human feeding behavior.

Abstract: The main objective of this review is to discuss human feeding behavior based on evolution. With regard to feeding, the human species has undergone various changes during its evolutionary and social history, from the hunting and gathering phase, including the discovery of fire, to modern times, mainly after the implementation of agriculture. These changes exerted a direct influence on feeding habits and behavior and a considerable impact on some aspects of human health. The present review also discusses some of… Show more

“…The historic rate of dietary changes during the development of human species far exceeded that of possible genotype alterations ( 2 ). Thus, our genotype is presumably not well adapted to the current abundance of refined grains and sugars, dairy products, and animal fats in the diets of industrialized populations ( 1 , 4 , 66 ). These considerations are used to explain the observations that a Mediterranean diet, which is rich in plant products and low in animal fats, is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular diseases ( 11 ).…”

“…The human species underwent various changes during evolutionary history from the hunting and gathering period, the discovery of fire, to present times, mainly after the implementation of agriculture [2]. Humans are thought to have struggled to find food in sufficient amounts and quality to ensure survival for reproduction [3].…”

“…Eaton and Konner (1997) stated that human genes had not changed since the Paleolithic period. Human beings are animals, submitted to the same environmental pressure as other animals and living species (Zucoloto, 2011). With this scientists have proposed several possible influences of diet in human evolution in which some can be highlighted: cranial-dental and bowel morphologic changes and increased energy needs leading to an elevated quotient between brain and body size (Mann, 2007).…”
