Use of photography in research with children and adolescents

Abstract

Objective: To identify studies that used Photo-Elicitation and Photovoice techniques as a strategy for data collection with children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the Web of Science, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and LILACS databases, with a search for articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, between 2010 and 2021. The searches were conducted between February and April 2022. Data were analyzed descriptively and organized into categories. Results:A total of 28 articles were included and, based on the analytical process, the following categories were constructed: Advantages of using Photo-Elicitation and Photovoice; and Challenges in using these techniques. Conclusion The literature is converging when considering that the visual approach is configured as a tool that facilitates the communication of the experiences of children and adolescents with chronic conditions, although it may present some challenges in its applicability.
