Gestalt Theory Rearranged: Back to Wertheimer

Abstract: Wertheimer's seminal paper of 1923 was of gerat influence in psychology and other sciences. Wertheimer also emphasized the weaknesses of the newborn Gestalt theory: too many basic laws, and the ambiguity of definitions. At the same time, the paper contained potential solutions to these problems, in the form of a number of very important ideas, some of which were presented implicitly: perception through imitation, communicative nature of linear drawings and writings, transfer from the visual domain to motor dom… Show more

Gestalt theory is arguably a foundation stone in interaction design that provides the basis for visual perception of interaction elements [34]. Chang et al suggest 11 laws from Gestalt theory that can be used in interaction design [35].…”

“…(Gould & Vrba, 1982, p. 4) Contrary to that normally thought of, taxonomy has been termed "the world's oldest profession" (Serrat, 2010, p. 1), because its concerns -the urge to sort and classify objects and phenomena in the world around us -appear universal in human cultures. This stems, perhaps, from the innate gestaltpsychological tendency to separate and group that which we perceive (Rey-brouck, 1997;Guberman, 2017). I explore the issue in some detail here because much of what is said about taxonomy in biology is also applicable to culture, albeit with significantly more difficulty on account of the faster and more convoluted nature of cultural evolution.…”
