Monoamine Oxidase A (MAOA) Gene and Personality Traits from Late Adolescence through Early Adulthood: A Latent Variable Investigation

Abstract: Very few molecular genetic studies of personality traits have used longitudinal phenotypic data, therefore molecular basis for developmental change and stability of personality remains to be explored. We examined the role of the monoamine oxidase A gene (MAOA) on extraversion and neuroticism from adolescence to adulthood, using modern latent variable methods. A sample of 1,160 male and 1,180 female participants with complete genotyping data was drawn from a British national birth cohort, the MRC National Surve… Show more

“…Several studies have analyzed the association of MAOA gene with neuroticism in populations of European and Asian descent (15,16,(25)(26)(27), with conflicting results ( Table 1).. The results of these studies are in line with our findings.…”

“…A polymorphism in the MAOA gene (rs1137070) was found as associated with MDD in females in a recent meta-analysis (11). The MAOA gene has been analyzed previously as a candidate for neuroticism in populations of European and Asian descent, with conflicting results (Table 1) (15,16).…”

“…Since grit is considered a dispositional trait, the psychometric properties of the grit construct may be subject to gender and age differences as shown in personality research ( Soto et al, 2011 ; see also Xu et al, 2017 ). Adult distance education student population has a more diverse range of age; it is thus important to assess whether measurement of the Grit Questionnaire holds invariant across age.…”

“…Antisocial behavior is a hereditary disorder inherited through an X-linked recessive inheritance pattern. The MAOA gene has correlation with this antisocial behavior [1,2]. Mutations in this gene result in low MAOA (MAOA-L) expression [3].…”
