A Comparative Analysis of Public Awareness Level about Drinking Water Quality in Guangzhou (China) and Karachi (Pakistan)

Safe drinking water is fundamental for the existence of life. The establishment of public awareness about drinking water quality is a most significant issue in the protection of health and the wellbeing of humans. The present study focuses on the assessment of community awareness level of, as well as public trust in, the government-provided information about drinking water quality in two highly populated underrepresented megacities of Asia, i.e., Guangzhou (China) and Karachi (Pakistan). The study was conducted to explore the respondents’ knowledge about the existing quality issues and the practices to remove the contaminants in drinking water in both cities, which was determined by numerical analysis using the scoring method system and multinomial regression model. The results show that the respective respondents’ percentage awareness level and positive attitude in Guangzhou were 46.2% and 30.0% compared with 23.1% and 7.4% in Karachi, respectively. The respective percentage of respondents’ trust in media stories/reports about water pollution accidents was 76.0% and 70.8%, while the trust in government-provided information was 79.3% and 39.7% in Guangzhou and Karachi, respectively. The p-values for drinking water quality according to public approval based on sociodemographic parameters (gender, age, family members, household income/month, education, etc.) of respondents in both cities were <0.05, which supports that the variations in acquired results were significant. The study advocates that increased awareness campaigns by government agencies and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in educational institutes and/or community centers can improve the public awareness level, which would subsequently help the governments to enhance the public trust, especially in Karachi. Moreover, the study’s findings have national significance and a worldwide scope, particularly in low- and middle-income regions.

The article gave an account of multiple artistic performances in Kolkata, India using music, dance, painting and theatre for environmental awareness specially focusing on global warming. The Other forms were pre planned but the theatrical performance involved public participation using forum theatre technique. The study tried to differentiate the participants and the audience participants according to male female, age group, literary background and economic background. 21-30 age group of participants showed maximum value. Active audience participation in forum was 11.46%. Economic background of the participants was calculated to be from the lower and middle class people while that of the audience also revealed almost the same feature. Result of the forum practice revealed that social and economic equity is necessary to create awareness. The study also clearly endorsed the fact that artistic involvement and active participation of people is one of the best practices for awareness movement because artistic involvement is inherited from the ancestor species of mankind as a method of social bonding. It generates altruism and empathy without which environmental sustainability is impossible. The study thus recommend this method as a model to be followed further.

Learning that is carried out using the experimental practicum method gives students the ability to think critically, actively and collaboratively in solving a problem in science material, especially environmental pollution material. This study aims to provide an alternative way for educators to convey material related to environmental pollution, especially water and air pollution. The method used is the development of practicum learning methods on the material of water pollution and air pollution which is carried out in class 7th grade students at junior high school. The results of the water pollution practicum research stated that the average fish operculum movement experienced the highest decrease in Jar 3, from 95 to 69. The results of observations on the average movement of fish that experience slow changes and die the most are in Jar 2 with an average of 60% of fish moving slowly and 80% of fish dying in the second minute. The higher the dose of detergent, the less movement of the fish operculum and the slower the movement of fish and the death. In air pollution, the highest percentage decline in normal cricket activity was in Jar 2, from 50% in the 3rd minute to 30% in the 6th minute. The longer the crickets were exposed to the smoke of the mosquito coils, the lower the displacement of the places carried out by the crickets and the higher the activity move the antenna.
