Asthma mortality among Brazilian children up to 19 years old between 1980 and 2007

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate asthma mortality among Brazilian children up to 19 years old in 1980 to 2007 Methods:This ecological time-series study used the database of the Brazilian Unified Health System, from which data were collected about the number of asthma deaths and the population under 19 years of age in Brazil. Mortality rates were calculated as the number of asthma deaths divided by population and multiplied by 100,000. Linear regression was used to assess the trend of mortality. “… 11 However, in the present study, most (68.1%) asthma deaths occurred in children under 5 years of age, 45% of which were observed in children between 1 and 4 years of age, a fact also observed in another Brazilian study. 8 Therefore, the authors considered it essential to include this age group in the current analysis. The methodological limitations for a more accurate diagnosis should not lead us to ignore this sad reality, especially in low-income countries and regions, where this group represents a higher proportion of asthma mortality in childhood and adolescence.…”

“…However, there is no minimum number recommended by the WHO in the specific case of medical specialists [ 8 ]. The number and type of specialists respond to several factors such as the epidemiological profile of the population under study, type of health system, the demographic composition of the population, patient demand, advances in technology, medical knowledge and planning in medical residencies [ 25 – 28 , 37 ]. So, what is the correct number of doctors?…”

“…According to the database of DATASUS (National Unified Health System – SUS), in the period 1980–2007, 9051 deaths due to asthma occurred in children and adolescents, but almost 70% in children younger than 5 yr . Mortality rates have reduced in all pediatric age groups, but more pronounced in children from 1 to 4 yr, ranging from 2.95 deaths in 1980 to 0.85 deaths per 100,000 in 2007.…”
