The efficacy of sucrose for the relief of pain in neonates: a systematic review of the literature

Abstract: Artigo submetido em 28.04.05, aceito em 29.06.05. AbstractObjective: To present a review of empirical studies published from 1993 to 2004 on the efficacy of sucrose solution for relieving pain in neonates.Sources of data: Information was obtained from the MEDLINE/ PsycINFO/ISI WEB of SCIENCE/LILACS and SciELO databases by searching for sucrose, pain, newborn and neonate. Summary of data:Sucrose solution has demonstrated efficacy in pain relief during puncture procedures on samples of preterm and fullterm neon… Show more

“…Newborns are even more sensitive to pain than adults. Their suppressive mechanisms are immature, which lowers the threshold of pain perception (6). The cause is the lack of inhibition of the pain stimulus in the spinal cord (5).…”

“…Mudar o RN de posição, aninhar, enrolar no cueiro, manter posição flexionada e suporte postural com contenção manual tem sido recomendado para facilitar a organização e autorregulação dos neonatos, durante a dor aguda 18 . Devese fazer o enrolamento antes do procedimento doloroso, utilizando uma coberta ou cueiro, envolvendo o neonato com a flexão das extremidades inferiores, e alinhando na linha mediana dos membros superiores flexionados, posicionando a mão perto da boca 19 .…”

“…(5) There is evidence that neonates, including preterm ones, have the neurological capacity to feel pain. (6) The neurological system necessary for the perception of pain is formed between 24 th and 28 th week of pregnancy (in preterm newborns the peripheral and central structures necessary to sense pain are present and functioning at birth). (6) None ≤ 9 % of time The use of oral sucrose to decrease pain during painful or stressful procedures is the most extensively studied pharmacologic intervention in neonates.…”
