Imiquimod/β-Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Abstract: Imiquimod (IMQ), an immune response modifier, is used for topical treatment of basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis. The very poor aqueous solubility of imiquimod gives rise to difficulties in designing aqueous formulations with this drug. One approach that is widely used to enhance drug solubility is complexation with cyclodextrins. The formation of the inclusion complex between IMQ and β-cyclodextrin was investigated in solution and in solid state. IMQ aqueous solubility was improved in the presence of… Show more

“…β‐Cyclodextrin (β‐CD), with a circular oligosaccharide composed of seven glucose molecules with a hollow cylinder structure, is used in the food industry to stabilise flavours, eliminate undesirable flavours, avoid microbial contamination, and inhibit browning reactions (Singh et al ., 2015). Its unique ability can trap various molecules (Guedes et al ., 2020). The hydrophobic cavity can form inclusion complexes with multiple organic guest molecules, including PPO and phenols (Sojo et al ., 1999) through non‐covalent host‐guest interactions (Alvarez‐Parrilla et al ., 2005; Boi et al ., 2019).…”
