Fast Screening of Solvents for Simultaneous Extraction of Furfural, 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Levulinic Acid from Aqueous Solution Using SMD Solvation Free Energies

Abstract: Acid catalyzed decomposition of C 5 and C 6 sugars has been considered an important source of biomass derived chemicals. An essential step in this process is the extraction of furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural and levulinic acid from aqueous phase. In this work, a computational screening of 178 organic solvents for simultaneous extraction of these chemicals from aqueous phase has been done with the continuum SMD (solvation model based on density) model. Our analysis has taken in account the partition coefficient… Show more

“…This report is related to our previous publication on fast solvent selection for extraction of chemicals (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural and levulinic acid) from aqueous solution. 50 Thus, we have shown that the procedure can be easily applied for solvent selection for chemical reactions. The accuracy of the predictions depends on the reliability of the SMD model, maybe the most widely used solvent model in the present time.…”

“…Thus, the SMD calculations were done for all the solvents via an automated procedure, using a python code (SNAPY) able to generate the input, run the quantum chemistry program and read the output. 50,51 These SMD calculations have taken only 2000 min into 8 nuclei intel XEON processor. The standard state of 1 mol L -1 was used in the final report of the free energies.…”

“…Particularly visualise sterilisation as a breakup of specific binding carbohydrates that leads to strippability. Sterilisation is viewed as a chemical reaction where the binding carbohydrates are degraded, as D'Alessandro E & Pliego Jr, 2018). Carbohydrates are commonly divided into monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides.…”

“…At low organic-to-aqueous volumetric ratios (0.2:1 and 0.5:1) and weight ratio of HCl to glucose of 1:1 (see Figure 6), an increase of the organic-toaqueous volumetric ratio from 0.2:1 to 0.5:1 slightly promoted the yield and selectivity of 5-HMF from 54.6 to 57.3% and from 56.3 to 58.6%, respectively. This was because the larger amount of MIBK in the system transferred 5-HMF from aqueous phase into the organic phase more effectively, preventing the rehydration of 5-HMF into undesired products (Leshkov and Dumesic, 2009;Dalessandro and Pliego, 2018). Higher extraction efficiency was strongly related to the mass transfer rate of 5-HMF into the organic phase (Zhou et al, 2018).…”
