Synergistic Effect of Adsorption and Enzymatic Conversion in the Bisphenol-A Removal by Laccase Immobilized on Poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate)

Abstract: Carriers with different functional groups (epoxy, aldehyde, ethyldiazonium, phenyldiazonium and amino) were tested for immobilization of T. versicolor laccase on GMA-co-EGDMA (glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate) microspheres. Laccase immobilized on GMA-co-EGDMA containing the phenyldiazonium functional group showed the highest activity (96.3 U g -1 ). The immobilized laccase was used for removal of bisphenol-A (BPA) from aqueous solution. The temperature effect was significant on activity, … Show more

“…Copolymers based on GMA also have been used to support enzymes like lipases and laccases, as reported by Milect and colleagues 6 and Melo and colleagues 17 . Miletec and colleagues 6 reported the impregnation of lipases of Candida antarctica (CalB) on GMA-EDGMA beads with different surface areas, pore volumes and average pore sizes.…”

“…The presence of epoxide groups in the polymeric matrix of GMA copolymers makes their functionalization easier, because the epoxide groups are very reactive 6 . Some works report copolymerization of the monomer GMA with a crosslinked monomer, commonly ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) 6,9,11,12,[15][16][17][18] or divinylbenzene (DVB) 7,8,10,13 and N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) 14 .…”

“…Among them, the chelating polymer ligands based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) are very attractive, due to the presence of oxirane rings that can easily be transformed into various functional groups [18]. These materials have found applications in very diverse areas such as drug delivery [19], support for enzymes [20], and wastewater treatment [21], as well as catalysis [22]. As a result of extensive research, Jovanović et al developed GMA-based polymeric sorbents with adjustable porosity parameters by varying the type and the amount of aliphatic alcohol and crosslinking monomer in the reaction mixture [23].…”
