Intercalation of Molybdate Ions into Ni/Zn Layered Double Hydroxide Salts: Synthesis, Characterization, and Preliminary Catalytic Activity in Methyl Transesterification of Soybean Oil

Abstract: This study reports the synthesis and characterization of a Ni/Zn layered double hydroxide salt intercalated with acetate ions and the subsequent replacement of the acetate ions with molybdate ions via an ion exchange reaction, conducted at two different pH values. Regardless of the pH employed during the synthesis, the basal spacing in the Ni/Zn layered double hydroxide salt decreased from 13.08 Å to approximately 9.5 Å, which agreed with intercalation of hydrated molybdate anions. The non-calcined material an… Show more

“…The bands located at 148, 397, 516, and 636 cm −1 in the spectra of the Na 2 MoO 4 /TiO 2 composites are attributed to the E g , B 1g , A 1g , and E g modes of the anatase phase TiO 2 [ 58 ]. The obvious peak at 895 cm −1 in the spectrum of the pure Na 2 MoO 4 powder is ascribed to the symmetric stretching modes of MoO 4 2− [ 59 ]. Correspondingly, for the spectra of the Na 2 MoO 4 –15.4%-TiO 2 , Na 2 MoO 4 –24.1%-TiO 2 and Na 2 MoO 4 –41.4%-TiO 2 samples, the stretching vibration peaks at 892, 929, and 950 cm −1 all belong to the symmetric stretching modes of MoO 4 2− , which display slight shifts as compared with that of the pure Na 2 MoO 4 powder, demonstrating the strong interaction between MoO 4 2− and TiO 2 .…”

“…The basal spacing in the NiZn-LDH decreased from 13.08 Å to ca. 9.5 Å regardless of the working pH, [85], which might suggest the intercalation of hydrated molybdate anions. The as-synthesized material and the solid that was obtained by thermal treatment at 250 • C (basal spacing reduced to 7.35 Å due to dehydration) were tested as catalysts for the methyl transesterification of soybean oil [85].…”

“…This behavior might be ascribed to the increased surface Brønsted acidity and the specific surface area shown by the Mo-containing sample [18,86]. Colombo et al [85] prepared at two different pH values a NiZn LDH initially intercalated with acetate ions, which were subsequently replaced with molybdate anions via an ion exchange reaction. The basal spacing in the NiZn-LDH decreased from 13.08 Å to ca.…”

“…The FTIR spectrum of ZHM-E3 (b) maintained the absorption band at 3440 cm –1 assigned to OH stretching vibrations, since only the interlayer anions were exchanged and the layers’ structure was preserved intact. A broad and strong absorption band was observed at 803 cm –1 , regarding the antisymmetric stretching vibrations of MoO bonds, confirming the presence of the interlayer molybdate anions. ,, Moreover, an absorption band could be observed at 1633 cm –1 , which can be assigned to the interlayer water bending vibration mode. , This absorption band was not identified in the spectrum of ZHA (a), probably because it was superimposed by the strong absorption band of the carboxylate group in the same region …”
