Larvicidal Activity of Beauveria bassiana Extracts against Aedes aegypti and Identification of Beauvericins

Abstract: Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus that has been well known for its capacity to act as biopesticide on various disease vectors. The analysis of organic extracts of strains CG71 and UNI40 led to identification of cyclodepsipeptides beauvericin, beauvericin A or F, beauvericin E and bassianolide by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry in tandem mode (UHPLC-HRMS/MS). The larvicidal activity on 3 rd instar of Aedes aegypti revealed LC 50 0.9887 and 0.4653 ppm in… Show more

“…The insecticidal activity of beauvericin was first described by Hamil, Higgens, Boaz and Gorman () against a model organism Artemia salina Linnaeus (Anostraca: Artemiidae). Similarly, other authors assessed the insecticidal effect of the mycotoxin on many pests including but not limited to Schizaphis graminum Rondani (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (Ganassi, Moretti, Pagliai, Logrieco, & Sabatini, ) and Calliphora erythrocephala Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (Daniel et al, ); however, little is known about the effectiveness of beauvericin to control mite populations and no investigation about the activity of the mycotoxin against T. urticae was found in the literature . The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the efficacy of beauvericin for the control of T. urticae and to screen its application on greenhouse strawberries.…”

“…In 1969, the working group of Hamill et al, firstly discovered the insecticidal activity of BEA against a model organism Artina salina (Hamill et al, 1969 ). Similarly, other authors investigated the insecticidal effect of BEA on Aedes aegypti (Grove and Pople, 1980 ), Calliphora erythrocephala (Daniel et al, 2017 ), Spodoptera frugiperda (Fornelli et al, 2004 ), and Lygus spp. (Leland et al, 2005 ).…”

“…Although BEA has similar chemical structures with other cyclic hexadepsipeptide mycotoxins, this mycotoxin is more effective against A. aegypti and suggesting a unique mechanism of action exists (Grove and Pople, 1980 ). The methanolic and ethyl acetate-methanolic extracts of B. bassiana showed larvicidal activity against 3rd instar of A. aegypti (Daniel et al, 2017 ). Cyclodepsipeptides are the active principles for the larvicidal action.…”
