Helicteres L. SPECIES (Malvaceae SENSU LATO) AS SOURCE OF NEW DRUGS: A REVIEW

Abstract: Helicteres genus, Malvaceae, has pantropical distribution, encompasses about 60 species, 31 of them found in Brazil. Species belonging to this genus are used for treatment of various diseases and aroused scientific interest in search for bioactive compounds present in these plants. In this context, this review aims to provide a complete and concise overview of scientific advances in phytochemical and pharmacological studies of these species and their use by folk medicine. The presented data were collected from… Show more

“…Shortly, the MS 2 spectrum of the precursor ion of m/z 359 [M-H] À led to product ions at m/z 344 [M-15-H] À and at m/z 223 [M-136-H] À , which are in accordance with the fragmentation pathway of the lariciresinol (1), [15,16] already reported in the roots of H. angustifolia [14] MS 2 fragmentation of the precursor ion of m/z 501 [M-H] À led to the product ion of m/z 341 [M-162-H] À , pointing out to the presence of a hexose moiety. Whereas MS 3 (8), which aglycone was already isolated from H. angustifolia.…”

“…described in Helicteres genus. [14] The identification of these compounds was based on the main deprotonated molecule [M-H] À as well as the observed fragmentations after MS n experiments (Table 1). Eight compounds were proposed, subdivided into two main classes, namely lignoids represented by lariciresinol derivatives [m/z 359 (1), m/z 503 (2), m/z 521 (3), m/z 537 (4), and m/z 699 (5)], and flavonoids represented by kaempferol glucosides (m/z 593, and m/z 447), and tricin-O-Glc (m/z 491).…”

“…studies have indicated that this genus is rich in constituents with diverse biological activities, including antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial, antiplasmodial, antinociceptive and hepatoprotective in H. isora (Kumar and Singh, 2014); antihypertensive and antiulcerogenic in H. sacarolha (Balogun et al, 2014), and analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticarcinogenic in H. angustifólia (Huang et al, 2013;Fernandes et al, 2020a). The species Helicteres velutina K. Schum, popularly known as "Pitó", is a plant used as an insect repellent by the Pankararé indians in Bahia state/Brazil.…”

“…The species H. velutina K. Schum, family Sterculiaceae, popularly known as "pitó" and It is endemic in Brazil, and the indigenous Pankararé tribe in Bahia uses it as a repellent. A few studies have shown that this species has repellent activity against Aedes aegypti larvae (Santos et al, 2012;Fernandes et al, 2018;Fernandes et al, 2019;Fernandes et al, 2020a;Fernandes et al, 2020b).…”
