Mineral prospection zones are known for their ability to alter environmental quality. The most recent cases of degradation of water resources in the cities of Brumadinho (MG), Mariana (MG) Santo Antônio do Grama (MG) and Barcarena (PA) show that this is a difficult theme to approach. The presence of potentially deleterious chemical species in mining tailings may negatively impact aquatic environments, making it impossible to use the contaminated water for consumption and leading to the extinction of local life. In this sense, environmental assessments in the mining, water and sediment tailings of water systems close to the mining areas present themselves as a tool to identify changes in the river basins that support them. Although studies point to the influence of mining activities on the quality of sediments of water systems, there are few contributions on the risks associated with the environmental quality of sediments in zones of mineral extraction of semiprecious rocks. Thus, this study characterized the influence of mineral extraction activities (amethyst, quartz, agate, calcite and gypsum) on the potential risk associated with the sediment quality of Rio de Várzea, southern Brazil, the world's largest region of ametetic rock extraction. Physical and chemical parameters (OD, pH, EH, CE, NTU, STD and T) of the water column were quantified in situ. Daily and monthly precipitations were also evaluated in the year of collection and the historical series (1976-2017) at the station 2753015, the fluviometry of the monthly and daily flows, and the historical flow series (2008-2017) at station 74270000, data from the National System Information on Water Resources. Sediment grading classes were investigated for coarse fractions (from 2000 to 75 μm) and for fine fractions (< 75 μm), their moisture content (gravimetric methods) was determined. Chemical species concentrations were quantified by Wavelength Scattering Spectrometry (WDXRF), Dispersive Energy X-ray Emission Spectrometry (EDXRF); Optical Emission Spectrometry by Coupled Inductive Plasma (ICP OES). It was demonstrated, through Background strategies and Environmental Quality Indexes, the moderate contamination of the sediments of Rio de Várzea-RS. It was established, by distinct geochemical strategies, the construction of the baseline (Background) of the Várzea River Watershed-RS, through the use of local soils of environmental preservation areas and, finally, the negative implication of the non use of local references in the evaluation of sediment quality.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentration of potentially toxic elements in Brachiaria decumbens, Stylosanthes guianensis, and Saccharum officinarum plants and soil samples in affected and unaffected areas by rupture of the Fundão dam, Brazil. Samples were collected in areas affected by residues from the Fundão dam (RAA1, RAA2, RAA3) and in an unaffected area (control). The material was analyzed for the composition of micronutrients and trace elements in soil and plants, as well as contamination factor (CF), accumulation factor, and translocation factor (TF). Overall, the results showed that soil and plant tissues had increased Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr content and decreased Zn content in the affected areas, compared to the control. Leaves and roots of B. decumbens showed an increase in Fe content in affected areas, compared to the control, reaching a mean maximum value of 42 958 µg/g of roots of RAA2‐collected plants. As a result, CF for Fe of B. decumbens was classified as very high and they presented low TF values. Furthermore, B. decumbens collected in affected areas showed an increase of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr in leaves, stems, and roots, whereas in Stylosanthes guianensis, there was an increase of Fe concentration in all tissues and Cr in leaves. Also, Saccharum officinarum showed the accumulation of Mn in the stem and Cu in leaves and stem. On the other hand, there was no contamination of plants by hazardous elements such as Pb, Cd, and As in the samples analyzed. In conclusion, increases in the content of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Cr were found in soil and several plant tissues of residue‐affected areas, which could compromise plant growth and represent potential hazards arising from the biomagnification process in the food chain. The Fundão Dam breached on 5 November 2015 (the “Event”), resulting in the release of tailings, water, scoured sediment and/or soil, and other debris to downstream watercourses. Statistical analyses using historical and recent water quality measurements were conducted to assess the extent to which water quality in the Rio Doce was recovering to baseline conditions. A review of station‐ and/or parameter‐specific water quality time series in the Rio Doce revealed two challenges: pre‐Event data imbalance and seasonality. Due to the combined effects of these two factors, data gathered from Rio Doce water quality stations before the Event likely underestimated concentration ranges and limited the usefulness of common recovery assessment techniques such as times series and water quality standard exceedance analyses. These challenges were addressed by calculating quarterly and watershed‐specific river‐to‐tributary ratios. R code was used to produce spatiotemporal time series for 44 investigated parameters that were measured both before and after the Event. The water quality recovery durations shown by the parameter‐ and/or region‐specific river‐to‐tributary ratio time series indicated that (a) turbidity provides the most conservative measure for water quality recovery; (b) chemical parameters associated with the tailings, like manganese and iron recovered faster than turbidity; and (c) other investigated parameters unrelated to the tailings showed either no discernable impact or rapid recovery after the Event. The resulting parameter‐ and/or region‐specific river‐to‐tributary ratio time series provided reliable and quantifiable estimates of water quality recovery durations. The water quality in the region furthest from Fundão Dam, in Espírito Santo, recovered one year after the Event, while water quality in the closest region to Fundão Dam, upstream of Risoleta Neves (Candonga) Dam, recovered 4.2 years after the Event.
