Iontophoresis on minoxidil sulphate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles accelerates drug release, decreasing their targeting effect to hair follicles

Abstract: The experiments described in this paper tested the hypothesis whether iontophoresis applied on a chitosan nanoparticle formulation could combine the enhanced drug accumulation into the follicular casts obtained using iontophoresis and the sustained drug release, reducing dermal exposure, provided by nanoparticles. Results showed that even though iontophoresis presented comparable minoxidil targeting potential to hair follicles than passive delivery of chitosan-nanoparticles (4.1 ± 0.9 and 5.3 ± 1.0 µg cm -2 , … Show more

“…Permeation studies using the modified Franz cell using porcine ear skin are well-known for comparing formulations [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]. However, this experiment could not distinguish the test formulation from the control since the crucial difference is the reduced runoff characteristic.…”

“…1) Magnetic stirrer was added to the receptor compartment and filled with phosphate buffer saline, pH 7.4 as the receptor medium. 16) Insulin loaded nanoparticles (containing 500 µg/mL insulin) were suspended in deionized water, and then added to the donor compartment (200 µL) for in vitro permeation test. One hundred microliter samples were taken from the receptor medium at different time intervals and replaced with the same volume.…”

“…Chitosan along with hyaluronic acid and collagen is also used in hair setting lotions and gels to produce a coating which adds thickness, volume, strength and prevent hair damage. Furthermore, chitosan nanoparticles loaded with minoxidil is used for sustained release of minoxidil for effective transdermal transport and hair growth [ 80 ].…”
