Cardiac Shock Wave Therapy for Coronary Heart Disease: an Updated Meta-analysis

Abstract: Introduction The aim of this article is to study the efficacy and safety of cardiac shock wave therapy (CSWT) in the treatment of coronary heart disease (CAD). Methods A comprehensive search of electronic databases and a manual search of conference papers and abstracts were performed until September 30, 2018. The studies using RevMan 5.3 and STATA 14.0 softwares were reviewed, and meta-analyses were performed on 13 indicators, such as a six-min walking distance test (6M… Show more

“…The bodily pain and general health domain of physical health component quality of life scores improved in all patients in our case series after ESMR therapy. Concordance with our findings, a metaanalysis study found ESMR therapy could improve CCS class up to one severity class (13). Another study by Schmid et al (18) demonstrated improvement of general health, physical function, and vitality domain in 11 patients with refractory angina after ESMR therapy.…”

“…Based on the current guidelines, the position of ESMR therapy is recognized as a potential treatment for refractory angina (1). Previous clinical studies of ESMR found beneficial effects for patients with refractory angina pectoris that do not have options for invasive approaches (13). However, most EMSR therapy trials only include a small sample of patients for each group (16)(17)(18).…”

“…At present, some studies indicated that CSWT could effectively improve myocardial function and perfusion in patients with stable angina and severe CAD at rest and during stress ( 11 , 14 , 21 , 38 , 39 ). Yang et al ( 17 ) showed that CSWT significantly improved LVEF compared to baseline in their meta-analysis based on six single-arm studies and one cohort study, while the improvement may be due to optimal medical therapy and lifestyle modifications. Our study based on RCTs minimized various confounders and selection bias and had a higher level of statistical reliability.…”

“…Some studies demonstrated that CSWT could enhance left ventricular (LV) systolic function and alleviate myocardial ischemia ( 11 – 13 ), whereas others found that there were no significant associations between CSWT and cardiac function or myocardial perfusion ( 14 , 15 ). To address this issue, Burneikaitë et al ( 16 ) and Yang et al ( 17 ) performed meta-analyses in 2017 and 2020, respectively. However, they missed several important studies reported in Chinese, and additional studies have since been published.…”
