Association of Platelet to Lymphocyte and Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratios with In-Hospital Mortality in Patients with Type A Acute Aortic Dissection

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with in-hospital mortality in type A acute aortic dissection (AAD).MethodsA total of 96 patients who presented to the emergency department between January 2013 and June 2018 with a diagnosis of type A AAD were enrolled in this study. White blood cell count subtypes such as NLR and PLR were calculated at the time of admission. The end point was in-hospital mortality.ResultsOf the 96 type A A… Show more

“…Both inflammation and hemostatic play important roles in the pathogenesis of AAAD [2]. Various inflammatory and hemostatic biomarkers have attracted more and more attention as prognostic indicators in AAAD patients [3][4][5][6]. Risk stratification using such biomarkers can help predict patients' outcome which is important for the healthcare providers to deliver appropriate therapeutic management [7].…”

“…I have read the article by Bedel et al [ 1 ] , entitled “Association of Platelet to Lymphocyte and Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratios with In-Hospital Mortality in Patients with Type A Acute Aortic Dissection” with great interest. First of all, I congratulate the authors for their invaluable contribution to the literature.…”

“…Total surgery was performed in 86 patients and mortality occurred in 7 patients who underwent surgery. However, postoperative mortality and mortality without surgery were evaluated in the same group and the relationship between blood parameters were investigated [ 1 ] . As we mentioned in the studies above [ 3 , 4 ] , it may be misleading to evaluate mortality only with reference blood parameters when surgery is applied to patients with aortic dissection.…”

“…and related surgeries. For example, for cardiac surgery patients, the value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can serve as a predictor of early and late mortality (5) (6), postoperative acute kidney injury (7), and postoperative atrial brillation (8,9), while the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has been reported to be a predictor of prognosis in patients with aortic dissection (10).…”
