3d Modeling to Identify and Quantify Obstacles in Aerodrome Protection Zone

Abstract: Aerodromes protection zones are defined by plans that are determined by three-dimensional (3D) limiting surfaces, which establish the airspace that must remain clear of obstacles, imposing some restrictions on land use. The objective of this paper is to generate 3D models of the surrounding area of Salgado Filho International Airport, considering the constructive altimetric limit established in the Aerodrome Protection Zone Basic Plan (PBZPA), to identify and quantify obstacles related to plots (urban land par… Show more

“…Geoprocessing with Geographic Information System (GIS) and databases is widely used for automatic or semi-automatic mapping. This process contributes to a dynamic and integrated origination, processing, and provision of aeronautical information through the supply and exchange of digital aeronautical digital data [ 44 ]. The ICAO electronic aeronautical terrain and obstacle maps are available for all airports regularly used by international civil aviation according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 19,100 series of geographic information standards [ 45 ].…”

“…The correct identification of obstacles around airports is essential to ensure the safety and regularity of air operations. In this context, there are several works concerning methodological proposals to identify obstacles to airports (Parrish andNowak 2009, Pinelli andVeracini 2015, Audu 2016, Falavigna, Iescheck andSouza 2020). Falavigna, Iescheck and Souza (2020) identified and quantified Salgado Filho International Airport obstacles in Porto Alegre city (Brazil), using 3D models of urban plots, buildings, and PBZPA.…”

This study showed that 4.52% of the urban plots and 13.17% of the buildings in the study area exceeded the limit imposed by the airport's PBZPA.…”
