Animals have been considered an indispensable tool to teach about the functioning of living organisms, to obtain skills necessary for practicing human and veterinary medicine, as well as for acquiring skills for caring for and conducting experiments on animals in laboratories. However, the efficacy of this practice has been questioned in the last decades and societal views have evolved to put a much larger emphasis on animal welfare and ethics that needs to be reflected in our teaching and training practices. Currently, many alternatives to harmful animal use are available, and it is not clear why thousands of animals continue to be used every year for educational and training purposes. Therefore, this study aimed to identify reasons for the lack of uptake of non-harmful educational and training methods by analysing recently published non-technical summaries in the EU and EEA Member States, and to provide examples of alternatives for specific learning objectives. Results from non-technical summaries from 18 countries spanning the most recent years (2017-2019) revealed that the two main perceived reasons for continued animal use are 1) the necessity of using a living animal for 'proper' learning and 2) the lack of an adequate alternative. We argue that these reasons often do not reflect reality. In conclusion, we consider it is necessary to put a stronger emphasis on engagement with ethical questions that underlie the use of animals and careful consideration of how the learning objectives could be achieved through non-harmful alternatives.

Virtual reality (VR) refers to an artificial environment which is experienced through sensory stimuli (such as sights and sounds) provided by a computer and in which one's actions partially determine what happens in the environment (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, 2020). In recent years, VR is increasingly used in different fields, and its role in medical practice is expanding quickly (Darekar et al., 2015; Chirico et al., 2016). One important feature of VR technology is its reproducibility (Ramnanan and Pound, 2017; Cao and Cerfolio, 2019). Practitioners can rehearse a procedure on a virtual patient or simulated tissue as many times as they wish before performing it on real patients. In medical education, VR allows students to see through body tissues and visualize the underneath areas (Cao and Cerfolio, 2019; Yu et al., 2019; Siyar et al., 2020). Practice experience is an essential element in pharmacy education (Teramachi et al., 2018). It is effective in boosting students' communication skills and problem-solving skills, which are both crucial for the provision of patient-centered care in a team-based approach (Lang et al., 2019). Unfortunately, actual practice experience can be limited by various factors, such as the policies at attachment sites, patients' preference, and availability of teaching staff (Wartman, 2019; Shrestha et al., 2020). Therefore, institutions are looking for alternative channels for students to practice their skills. One strategy is to adopt simulated patient cases (Kurup et al., 2017; Willemsen-Dunlap et al., 2018; Silva et al., 2019). In this paper, we share our experience of using VR learning tools in pharmacy education in a Hong Kong university. We will discuss the opportunities, challenges, and suggestions for future development of VR in pharmacy education.

O treinamento simulado surge como importante ferramenta na educação médica, embora com custos elevados para a maioria dos simuladores disponíveis. Assim, busca-se o desenvolvimento de alternativas para a aprendizagem de habilidades cirúrgicas que aprimorem a qualidade do ensino e sejam financeiramente acessíveis. Desse modo, foi idealizado um modelo de pele artificial, como método substitutivo à pele animal para ensino e treinamento de incisões e suturas na formação dos acadêmicos do curso de medicina. Foi utilizado silicone industrial que foi moldado em couro sintético para a impressão de marcas similares às encontradas na pele e fixado em suporte de espuma de poliuretano de maneira a representar as camadas do tecido humano. A matéria prima utilizada forneceu a totalidade de 9 moldes de dimensões 10 cm x 10 cm x 3 cm, representativos da pele humana e o modelo alternativo, apresentou resultados satisfatórios, principalmente no quesito estrutural, sendo mais fiel na representação de planos anatômicos e textura da epiderme quando comparados ao uso de tecido e outros materiais sintéticos como espuma vinílica acetinada (EVA), aliado à maior facilidade de armazenamento, manuseio, e possibilidade de reutilização.
