Selection of tomato genotypes for drought tolerance and agronomic potential through different selection indexes

Abstract: The selection of genotypes with agronomic potential associated with drought tolerance is considered of high complexity. An alternative could be the use of selection indexes that can evaluate multiple characteristics simultaneously. This study aimed to select tomato genotypes with agronomic potential and drought tolerance by selection indexes. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications. Ten treatments were evaluated: seven genotypes F2RC3, donor genitor (Solanum pennellii)… Show more

“…It has been reported that tomato plant characteristics should be prioritized to obtain future cultivars, especially with regard to the various biotic ( Ferrero et al, 2020 , Zanin et al, 2021 ) and abiotic stressors ( Oliveira et al, 2021 , Wen et al, 2021 ), as well as the nutritional quality of the fruit ( Londoño-Giraldo et al, 2020 , Gomes et al, 2021 , Oliveira et al, 2022 ) for a healthy diet ( Asensio et al, 2019 ). A major obstacles to this is the narrow genetic base of the tomato germplasm ( Hassan et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Moreover, seed germination and initial seedling stages are critical for plant establishment and development under drought and, thus, represent an important selection step (Mishra et al, 2016). In addition, morphophysiological traits, such as growth, water balance and gas exchange parameters, are major indicators of plant tolerance to drought in adult plants (Dariva et al, 2020; Galmés et al, 2013; Oliveira et al, 2021; Xiong & Nadal, 2020). Relative water content (RWC) reflects the water balance of plants, being a reliable indicator for drought tolerance (Patanè et al, 2016).…”
