Cerebral palsy is defined by reduced cognitive and psychomotor capacity and ability caused by cerebral hypoxia. Patients with cerebral palsy usually have a higher incidence of diseases than the general population. Both systemic and stomatological alterations are commonly observed. Dentistry provides part of the special care that patients with cerebral palsy may require, and the dental surgeon must be prepared to meet their needs, both preventively and curatively. Care requires not only specific oral health care, but also a psychological approach and support for family members and carers, favouring general health and quality of life of the patient with cerebral palsy. The purpose of this article is to review stomatological and behavioural characteristics to help establish a protocol for caring for patients with cerebral palsy

A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) definiu como deficiência, alterações que podem ser em relação à estrutura corporal ou ao funcionamento mental. Assim como nas outras áreas da saúde é necessário um tratamento odontológico adequado para melhorar a eficácia e segurança do tratamento e estabelecer as melhores práticas clínicas. Dentre essa classificação, estão os pacientes com paralisia cerebral, que possuem uma maior taxa de incidência de doenças do que a população em geral. Cabe aos profissionais da saúde entender que, o nascimento de um filho com deficiência intervém em toda a estrutura familiar. Porém existem ainda barreiras de muitos dentistas relutantes e com medo em relação aos pacientes com deficiência, a falta de evidências de alta qualidade sobre as barreiras enfrentadas por crianças com deficiência continuará sendo um desafio para muitos dentistas, porém, essa questão deve ser levada a sério para defender o direito à saúde e bem-estar para esses pacientes, podendo estabelecer uma abordagem multidisciplinar e melhorar o estado geral de saúde, assim como a qualidade de vida. Com isso, o objetivo dessa revisão de literatura é promover a identificação das características dentárias, craniofaciais e comportamentais para auxiliar no estabelecimento de um atendimento adequado e orientações de pacientes e cuidadores para se evitar a progressão das anomalias bucais.
