Introduction Caries has a harmful impact on oral and general health and is a major public health problem among children and adolescents. The objective of present study was to investigate into dental caries, oral hygiene, the frequency of brushing habits and dental visits among 15- year- old adolescents. Material and methods This cross-sectional study was carried out on a random sample of 323 15- year- old adolescents in different schools and municipalities of Kosovo. Oral clinical examination and self-administered questionnaire were used to obtain information about dental caries and oral health practices. Oral hygiene and caries status in permanent dentition was assessed through the DMFT index and Oral Hygiene Index - Simplified (OHI-S). The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results The total mean of the DMFT index was 3.21 ± 2.193, while component D of the DMFT index dominated in both genders, with slightly higher values in boys compared to girls (2.15±2.092, and 1.91±1.919). The mean OHI-S index of adolescents aged 15 was found to be 1.945±3.926. Over 50% of schoolchildren brush their teeth only once per day and they have visited the dentist only when it was necessary. Irregular tooth-brushing, dental visits and poor oral hygiene index were significantly related to dental caries. Conclusion The results of the study showed poor oral health status among 15- year- old adolescents in Kosovo. There is an emergent need for caries-prevention programs focusing on oral health and healthy habits.

INTRODUCTION: Oral Health, like general health, is a basic fundamental right for all, and even more so for the underprivileged. AIM: To evaluate the oral health status of Institutionalized orphans aged 6-12 years and non-orphans in Indore, Madhya PradeshMATERIALS AND METHODS: The present descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among various registered orphanages in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Oral Examination was done by two standardized examiners (ADA type III examination) and data was entered using a pre-tested and pre-validated proforma. Data was transferred into MS excel and after application of descriptive statistics, the independent samples t-test and multiple logistic regression were applied (p value significant at ≤ 0.5). RESULTS: Of the total 263 study subjects, there were 132(50.2%) orphans and 131(49.8%) school children aged 6-12 years. Among orphans, males (62.9%) formed the majority; use of toothbrush with toothpaste was observed among 69.7% of orphans, while 6.1% did not use any oral hygiene aid. The most common observed hard lesion was dental caries (31.8%) as compared to 20.6% in school children and its presence revealed a significant association (p=0.02). CONCLUSION: It is recommended that a special emphasis should be made to promote oral health among the children residing in orphanages.

: The practice of oral hygiene needs to be strengthened during adolescence, a time when there is a significant change in habits, leading to an increase in the prevalence of tooth decay associated with less frequent brushing. The propose of the study is to determine the oral hygiene status in 5-15-year-old children, the lack of the previous data in this field is one the reasons for conducting this research so that we can provide accurate statistics data in Afghanistan.: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out between 5-15-year-old in 431 children of stomatology national hospital of Kabul city. Sample size was selected randomly from both gender group which were 161 males and 270 females. Oral hygiene status was assessed by using simplified-oral hygiene index. Gingival index (loe and silness, 1963) was used for assessing gingival status. dmf and DMF for decayed, missed and filled teeth in primary and permanent dentition used to assess the prevalence of dental caries. Statistical analysis done by SPSS .20.21.2% of children had good oral hygiene status, 65.2% fair oral hygiene and 13.6% had poor oral hygiene. The mean OHI-S was 2.4±1.19. There is no Statistical significant difference between gender and oral hygiene status (p<0.05). The prevalence of dental caries was 80.9%. Boys mean dmf was 4.15±3.03 and it was in girls 3.05±2.67, that shows higher prevalence of dental caries in boys than girls. Overall mean of dmf scores was 3.48±2.86. 173 (40.9%) had normal gums. 31.6% of children not brush their teeth, 37.4% brush once in a day.: Oral hygiene status was fair in more than half of the sample size. High prevalence of dental caries seen in males. Dental caries is a major public health problem and an active and effective dental care prevention program for children is needed.
