Clove (Eugenia caryophyllus) essential oil in diets for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) improves fillet quality

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of including clove essential oil (EOcl) in Nile tilapia diets on animal performance and antioxidant power, lipid oxidation, gene expression, texture, pH, color and sensory analysis in fillets. Three levels of EOcl in the diets were evaluated (0.70, 1.05 and 1.40 g/kg), provided over three periods before slaughtering the animals (15, 45 and 60 days). The antioxidant power in the diets increased after including EOcl. There was an interaction effect between the level and period of … Show more

“…Fish production and consumption have increased significantly over the years, driven by population growth and increased per capita consumption, capitalization and technological development (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2020). Due to their nutritional qualities, fish play an important role in human nutrition (Claret et al, 2014;Sary et al, 2022). Thus, aquaculture has become an alternative for food production and, among the species produced, tilapia stands out with favorable zootechnical characteristics and good acceptance in the world market (Associação Brasileira da Piscicultura, 2020; Albergaria et al, 2022).…”

“…Because of its strong aroma and pungent taste, clove is often used for food seasoning, especially for meat and bread. It is a unique seasoning for Christmas food in Europe and the United States, and is often used as an auxiliary material for cooking flavor dishes, stewed dishes and pickles in Asian countries (Sary et al, 2022). Because of its strong fragrance, cloves were also used to cover up bad breath, and were not used as chewing gum in ancient China.…”
