Cryptotanshinone protects hippocampal neurons against oxygen-glucose deprivation-induced injury through the activation of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway

Abstract: Cryptotanshinone (CPT), a terpenoid isolated from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, was reported to have neuroprotective effects against cerebral ischemic stroke. However, the exact molecular mechanism underlying its neuroprotective ability remains unclear. The present study aimed to explore the regulatory effects of CPT on oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced cell injury in a model of hippocampal neurons. Our results demonstrated that CPT improved cell viability and reduced the lacta… Show more

“…Nrf2 signaling pathway is a key pathway to maintain cellular redox homeostasis, which is related to anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, reduction of mitochondrial damage, and regulation of iron death (Bai et al, 2019;Xu et al, 2022). Some studies have found that HO-1 is an essential enzyme for the occurrence of iron death, and the degradation product of HO-1 contains iron, which leads to iron overload in cells.…”
