Possible action mechanisms of vitamin D supplementation in combating obesity and obesity-related issues of bone health: a mini review

Abstract: Vitamin D is necessary for maintaining the bone function, and its deficiency is linked with the development of obesity. Moreover, bone health is correlated with obesity through many mechanisms by modulating bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate as adipose cells, inflammatory response, glucose metabolism, oxidative homeostasis, energy metabolism and gut microbiota. Based on previous studies, vitamin D, obesity, and bone health are linked with each other at multiple levels. However, our knowledge o… Show more

“…An efficient method for improving muscle growth and strength as well as overall physical performance in older persons is the combination of resistance training and post-exercise protein supplementation (Khor et al, 2022;Velasco et al, 2022). Vitamin D intake is critical for older adults because of its widely recognized links to bone health, muscle strength and function (Li et al, 2022;Prokopidis et al, 2022b;Wang et al, 2022). The predominant form of vitamin D found in circulation is 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) (Bollen et al, 2022).…”

“…Then it will inhibit the secretion of various proinflammatory cytokines showing anti-inflammatory effect. During this process, calcitriol, as a hormonal form of VD, exerts its immunomodulatory properties and functions through the activation of VDR, which has a direct effect on inflammatory pathways [15]. In other experiments, active VD was used to treat and inhibit palmitate to induce macrophages to produce TNF-α and IL-6.…”

“…Obesity is one of the most prevalent chronic metabolic diseases in the world, mainly caused by an energy imbalance, resulting in abnormal or excessive accumulation of body fat (Wang et al, 2022;Yildiz et al, 2021). With the advent of fastpaced life and changes in diet, the global obesity problem is rapidly spreading among adults, adolescents, and even children.…”
