The effects of training by virtual reality or gym ball on pelvic floor muscle strength in postmenopausal women: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the effectiveness of abdominopelvic training by virtual reality compared to pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) using a gym ball (a previously tested and efficient protocol) on postmenopausal women’s pelvic floor muscle (PFM) strength.MethodA randomized controlled trial was conducted with 60 postmenopausal women, randomly allocated into two groups: Abdominopelvic training by virtual reality – APT_VR (n=30) and PFMT using a gym ball – PFMT_GB (n=30). Both types of training were supervised b… Show more

“…Pelvic floor muscle contraction training depends on understanding the exercise commands given and awareness of the location of these muscles. In addition, training must include acceptance, motivation and inclusion of longterm contraction exercises (12,17) . The PFM training programs should be based on awareness and learning programs as well as home exercises because treatment can be faster and have better results when the patient adhere to and understand the purpose of the treatment, making the patients more secure and confident to perform tasks from day to day (18) .…”
