Correlation between psoriasis' severity and waist-to-height ratio

Abstract: In the absence of ideal biomarkers, the research for clinical markers correlated to the severity of psoriasis and/or its comorbidities becomes crucial. Recently, studies have shown positive correlation between body mass index and prevalence and severity of psoriasis. Abdominal circumference showed stronger correlation with disease severity than body mass index. We evaluated the waist-to-height ratio in a sample of 297 adult patients with psoriasis and observed that it has a significant correlation with body ma… Show more

“…[54] At the same time, obesity is a common comorbidity of psoriasis and psoriatic disease severity has been positively correlated with body mass index and waist to height ratio. [55, 56] Adipocytokines have also been posited to contribute to the systemic inflammation in psoriasis. [57] Thus, an imbalance in the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio in the psoriatic gut microbiome may reflect the relationship between psoriasis and its cardiovascular and metabolic comorbidities.…”

“…[ 12 ] established that for each unit increment increase in body mass index (BMI), there was a 9% higher risk for psoriasis onset and 7% higher risk for PASI. Recent studies show that WHR has a stronger correlation with cardiovascular diseases [ 13 ]. Our study also showed associations between psoriasis and obesity ( p = 0.43) with high WHR compared with the general population.…”

“…Furthermore, a large body of evidence revealed that psoriasis is related to obesity and especially central obesity . Accordingly, psoriasis patients are more likely to suffer from insulin resistance compared to normal controls and various studies have found that the prevalence rate (PR) of DM is higher in patients with psoriasis …”
