Tempo de ativação muscular em portadoras de disfunção temporomandibular durante a mastigação

Abstract: The activation time of the masticatory muscles was not found to be shorter in the TMD patients than in the controls. Finally, the application of the electromyographic variable proposed in this study may not be considered useful to diagnose type Ia TMD in clinical practice. However, its application may be complementary to the history and physical examination of these patients.

“…(17) Dentists have a risk factor for TMD, since during the visits, both head and body posture is not adequate. According to Viana et al the posture of the head interferes with the posture of the mandible and the opposite can also happen, agreeing with Souza, who says that individuals with TMD present postural changes, mainly in head posture.…”

“…(19,21,22) Individuals with TMD can be studied through characteristic signs and symptoms. (17) According to Bassi et al and Pachioni et al the mandibular functional impairment is one of the main symptoms of TMD, being used even through the MFIQ as a parameter to follow treatment evolution of patients with TMD.…”

“…Other techniques for treating myogenic TMD can be considered for assessing the responsiveness of duty factor, such as the use of muscle relaxants or the contract-relax technique, being as the measurement differentiates asymptomatic individuals from those with myogenic TMD (2) and presents excellent intrasession reliability.…”

“…The masticatory muscles of individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are more easily fatigued and hyperactivated when exposed to abnormalities of movement, structure, posture, or even worse, stress or pain (2) . In addition to fatigue and hyperactivity, an altered pattern of muscle activation occurs, according to the pain adaptation model.…”

“…An accurate diagnosis of TMD is critical for treatment planning and increases the chances of successful outcomes. Evidence suggests that individuals with TMD have a lower rate of motor unit discharge in painful muscles [ 4 , 5 , 6 ] and early fatigue, compared with individuals without TMD [ 7 , 8 ]. Surface electromyography (sEMG) provides a direct and objective assessment of muscle excitation [ 4 , 5 ] and can aid in the diagnosis of TMD, particularly the assessment of masticatory muscle activity in patients with impaired function and altered jaw movement patterns [ 9 , 10 ].…”
