Abstract: Objective: to evaluate the incompleteness of Mortality Information System (Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade - SIM) data on deaths from external causes (ECs) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, 2000-2019. Methods: This was an ecological study, using SIM data on all deaths from external causes and, specifically, from transport accident, homicides, suicides and falls; the analysis of the trend of incompleteness was performed by means of Prais-Winsten regression, with a 5% significance level. “…Regarding the limitations of this research, the quality of the Mortality Information System stands out, given the possibility of underrecording of deaths, problems of duplicity and reliability of Death Certificate information, widely reported in the literature, 16 which may also underestimate mortality from mental and behavioral disorders due to use of alcohol, thus compromising interpretation of trends found. However, these limitations did not invalidate the findings of this study in terms of informing public policy implementation, with emphasis on geographically specific actions, prioritizing territories where high mortality rates due to alcohol use were found.…”

“…The research note entitled Assessment of incompleteness of Mortality Information System records on deaths from external causes in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, 2000-2019 1 presented results of an ecological time series study based on the analysis of deaths from external causes (ECs), specifically, from transport accidents, homicides, suicides and falls, occurred in Rio Grande do Sul, registered on the Mortality Information System ( Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade - SIM), between 2000 and 2019. There were discrepancies in the decreasing trends observed for sociodemographic variables among the alarming number of deaths analyzed (n = 146,882), according to causes of death.…”
