The Ecology and Conservation of Wild Rice, Zizania palustris L., in North America

Abstract: Wild rice is an enigmatic plant species in the upper northern Midwestern U.S. Wild rice (Zizania palustris L.) is widespread in the region. However, it is both a wild species and a semi-domesticated crop. “…Northern wild rice (NWR; Zizania palustris L.) is an outcrossing, annual aquatic grass in the Poaceae family. The species grows naturally in lakes and streams across the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, and provides food and habitat to many species in aquatic ecosystems (Steeves 1952;Huseby 1997;Biesboer 2019). In addition to natural stands, NWR has been cultivated in irrigated paddies since the 1950s, with the largest production in Minnesota and California (Oelke and Porter 2016).…”
