Environmental gradient in reservoirs of the medium and low Tietê River: limnological differences through the habitat sequence

Abstract: AIM: The reservoirs of the medium and low Tietê River are disposed as a "cascade series", in which time, physiographic features and influence from drainage basins present differences that determine variability in their dynamics. These reservoirs are submitted to different impacts from the urban centres which they drain, and also from agricultural activities.Considering these features, the aim of this work was to characterize the Medium and Low Tietê river stretches by limnological analysis (including water and… Show more

“…The macrophyte species composition in the Tietê River Basin Cavenaghi et al, 2003;Martins et al, 2008;Smith et al, 2014;Tanaka et al, 2002) is similar to those found in the Itupararaga Reservoir. In this ecosystem, there was a predominance of emergent species (Polygonum lapathifolium, Althernanthera philoxeroides, Eichhornia azurea) and others such as Myriophyllum aquaticum, Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia, Hymenachne, Ludwigia, Cyperus and the Nymphaea genus.…”

“…In the laboratory, the macrophytes were washed to remove the coarse material, separated by species and dried (60 °C) to a constant weight (Pompêo & Moschini-Carlos, 2003) to obtain the dried biomass (g DW.m -2 ). Macrophyte species identification was performed using specific literature (Amaral et al, 2008;Pott & Pott, 2000;Scremin-Dias, 1999) The water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO) were measured in the sampling sites using a probe (YSI, 556). The rainfall and water flow data of the reservoir during the sampling period was provided by the dam operator.…”

“…In another study concerning spatial variation in a cascade system of six reservoirs located along the Tietê River (São Paulo State, Brazil), Rodgher et al (2005) and Smith et al (2014) observed that TN and TP showed the same patterns of variation in water and sediment, as suggested by the CRCC (Barbosa et al 1999). The patterns were similar to those observed in the present study.…”

“…The increasing number of reservoirs shows their important role for human populations, such as power generation, supply and recreation (Tundisi & Matsumura-Tundisi, 2003). Their imposition on natural systems, however, causes significant modifications of hydrology, morphology and riverine habitats, changes which have been well documented (Smith et al, 2014).…”
