Use of artificial sediment to assess toxicity of chromium on Chironomus xanthus, Danio rerio and Poecilia reticulata

Abstract: AIM: Artificial sediments with simple formulations were used to assess the toxicity of Cr to C. xanthus, D. rerio and P. reticulata. METHODS: The organisms were exposed to two sediment formulations: one without organic matter (S0) and one with 1% organic matter (SIII), both contaminated with Cr at concentrations of 90, 180, 360, 720 and 1440 mg/kg for the assays with C. xanthus, and 375, 750, 1500 and 3000 mg/kg for those with the two fish species. Chromium was obtained from the potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7).… Show more

“…Our results complement previous attempts to establish methodology and standards for biomonitoring with C. sancticaroli (Moreira- Dornfeld et al 2006;Santos et al 2007;Janke et al 2011;Printes et al 2011and Campagna et al 2013, Richardi et al 2015. The present experiment also contributed to the establishment of simple solutions with low costs of biomonitoring by using in situ assays to complement previous works (Soares et al 2005;Dornfeld et al 2006;Faria et al 2006).…”

“…The results of ecotoxicological assays addressed aluminum in water (Shuhaimi-Othman et al 2011, 2012 and chromium in sediments (Flores-Tena & Martínez-Tabche 2001, Campagna et al 2013. These results corroborated our data on the Limnodrilus sp.…”

“…Their life cycles comprise four phases: ovigerous mass, larva (with ve instars), pupa, and mosquito (Silva et al, 2019). The larva are aquatic sediment diggers and feed on detritus, which often expose them to chemicals via several uptake routes (Campagna et al, 2013).…”
