Phytoplankton richness and abundance in response to seasonality and spatiality in a tropical reservoir

Abstract: Aim Species richness and abundance are important elements in understanding communities’ dynamics. In this way we evaluated the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton richness and density in a tropical reservoir, and its main drivers. We tested whether the temporal variability of the hydrological cycle influences the phytoplankton, in addition to testing the main environmental variables that influence richness and density. Methods Data from environmental variables and phytoplankton were sampled in dif… Show more

“…Among the preferred environmental conditions of the group is its affinity for aquatic environments with greater turbidity and higher concentrations of nutrients (Reynolds et al, 2002;Padisák et al, 2009). The most abundant taxa of diatoms found in these lakes were Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen, Cyclotella sp., and Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing), which are common taxa in continental aquatic environments (Moura et al, 2021). A. minutissimum, for example, abundant in lake L6, is considered to be one of the most abundant species in the world (Potapova & Hamilton, 2007).…”

“…Ecological indexes have been widely used through the study of alpha diversity to show the spatio-temporal variations of the phytoplankton community [25,60], their use plays an important role in understanding biodiversity and in elucidating measures for monitoring aquatic ecosystems, especially of reservoirs, also contributing to the conservation and maintenance of these environments [61]. Similar to this study, Badsi et al (2012) [62] found seasonal variation in phytoplankton diversity, with the lowest values occurring in the rainy season.…”

“…The assessment of the population of various organisms at any particular location and time form a basis of understanding the trophic state of that biological environment [7]. Species abundance and richness are important indicators in understanding changes in the aquatic environment [8]. Health status of aquatic ecosystem is dependent on the physico-chemical properties and biological diversity of the water body [9].…”
