Objectives To investigate adolescent orthodontic patient experiences and quality of life with fixed appliances compared to Invisalign. Materials and Methods Adolescent patients in active treatment with Invisalign or fixed appliances for a minimum of 6 months were provided with the Child Oral Health Impact Profile-Short Form 19 questionnaire, along with additional items of interest that were assessed separately. Pearson's χ2 test was used to compare responses (P < .05), and unpaired t-tests (P < .05) were used to test for differences in mean satisfaction, quality of life, and domain scores. Results In total, 74 patients (37 in each treatment group) participated. Overall, no significant differences were noted in the mean quality of life, satisfaction, or domain scores between the two groups. A significant difference was noted in the time taken to adjust to appliances, with the Invisalign group demonstrating faster adaptation. Additionally, the fixed appliance group was 3.8 times more likely to report missing school because of their appliance (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2, 12.5) and 2.7 times more likely to report having difficulty eating certain foods (95% CI: 1.1, 7.1). When the sample of females between the ages of 14 and 18 was analyzed, the Invisalign group reported feeling attractive more often than the fixed appliance group. Conclusions Both treatment groups were generally very satisfied with their treatment modality. The overall quality of life of adolescent orthodontic patients undergoing treatment with fixed appliances and Invisalign for a minimum of 6 months was similar.

Orthodontic treatment (OT) is essential for the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of the chewing apparatus, however it may lead to certain complications which can have a negative impact on patients' everyday lives. The study included patients of the Dental Teaching Clinic of Universidad de La Frontera who were undergoing OT for the first time, with the placement of their first orthodontic arch. To analyse the impact of the placement of the first arches on everyday activities (EDA), patients completed a questionnaire with questions relating to their oral condition, including: functional limitation, physical impairment, psychological malaise, physical pain and oral hygiene. The impact on EDAs was classified as high, moderate or low. The chisquared test, Student's t-test and Spearman's coefficient were applied, using a significance threshold of 5 %. Statistical analysis used the SPSS software, v. 22.0. The variables were analysed by sex and age-band. Difficulty in brushing their teeth, eating and speaking were the limitations on EDAs most frequently reported by the patients. Females presented higher scores than males (p=0.003), showing that they suffer a greater negative impact on EDAs than do males. The majority of the patients presented a low impact on EDAs after the placement of their first orthodontic arches. Physical pain after installation, and difficulty in adapting to the orthodontic apparatus were factors determining a negative impact on EDAs, affecting sleep, speech, eating and oral hygiene of patients after starting OT.

Objective:To determine the level of Oral Health-related Quality of Life satisfaction in orthodontic patients compared with the control group. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the standardized questionnaire "Oral Health-related Quality of Life" (OHRQoL) was used. The 37 statements in the questionnaire are divided into four subscales; the total satisfaction score has been evaluated as well. 146 orthodontic patients (42.5% men) aged 8-72 years were divided into four subgroups: (i) patients treated by dental crowns and implants (DCI), (ii) subjects with dental prosthesis (DP), (iii) patients treated by dental braces (DB), and (iv) patients treated by dental retainer (DR). The control group consisted of 49 dental patients without any orthodontic treatment (51.0% men in mean age 20.0±8.2 years). Mean scores and levels of satisfaction (%) were evaluated in all subgroups and in all subscales. Results: The lowest rate of patients OHRQoL satisfaction was observed in the DP subgroup; the highest satisfaction level was found in the DCI subgroup. The highest rate of patient OHRQoL satisfaction in the study group was observed in subscales social well-being and functional limitation, and the highest level of dissatisfaction in a subscale emotional well-being. High significant differences between study and control groups were found in terms of a higher satisfaction level in a control group. Conclusion: The most dissatisfied were the oldest patients with dental prosthesis with the highest level of dissatisfaction in the emotional well-being subscale.
